Looking Ahead: Getting to Know God in 2013

For this week’s “Pastoral Notes,” I’ve asked Charlotte Robinson, who leads our Women’s Bible Study Ministry Team, to tell us what the Cornerstone women have to look forward to in the New Year. Here’s what she wrote:

Do you know God? Each of us would probably be quick to say, “Sure I do.” The question is, do we know the God revealed in Scripture, or do we know the God of our own imagining? The great author and preacher A. W. Tozier wisely said, “The tragic and frightening decline in the spiritual state of the churches has come about as a result of our forgetting what kind of God God is.” It therefore behooves us to study and know our God in the fullness of His majesty, to have large thoughts about this One, the Creator, the Source of all things, our Holy Father.

We can and will never know Him completely because He is too weighty, too full, so much more than we can ever get our minds around. However, this should never deter us from the study of God, for in so doing, we will find our faith increased, our love deepened, and our longing to be obedient servants heightened to new levels. In fact, our concept of God determines everything else about our lives.

We hear the Lord proclaim his own character in Exodus 34:6-7 as he states:

The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful, and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

The Westminster Shorter Catechism fourth question asks, “What is God?” You may know the answer…”God is Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.” What a God!

As women of Cornerstone, we will pursue a more full-orbed knowledge of this great God as we study together for six weeks beginning January 8th. Using the scriptures and the small, wonderful book by A. W. Pink, The Attributes of God, we will delve into God’s character. This study will cause us to think deeply, examine our hearts and minds more closely, open our eyes to new insights, and feast upon the beauty of this One to whom we owe our very breath.  We begin this study with the prayer and the desire that we will be transformed through our looking into the face of God to know Him more fully.

The book for our study is available through the church office. Whether you study with us or not, I highly recommend you purchase this book and refer to it with regularity in your pursuit of God. Since each lesson stands alone, you can come as you have opportunity and still glean profound blessing from attending. We will offer questions that will help you ‘dig deeper’ into each attribute, but these will be totally optional. The questions for the first lesson will be made available from the church office on Sunday, December 30th.

If the longing of your heart is to know God and to live rightly before Him, we invite you to come study with us, and may we each say with Job, “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you.”
